Cyber Plug
Hi. I'm an IT Guy on pretty much any TV show or film; I'm socially awkward, hyper-casually dressed and I know everything there is to know about computers - because I'm the IT Guy. If some encrypted data is found, just leave it with me, because I can usually decrypt it by the time the next scene has completed. I typically tend to come into my own when a system is being hacked from an external location by the bad guys. When it comes to defending the system from a bad actor, you'll see me punishing the keyboard with a gazillion characters a second, fighting hackers, blow by blow, as if cyber security is some kind of weird martial art.
It isn't.
It's just that I'm a comfortable archetype that you recognise because people in IT tend to know much more about IT and that can make people feel less good about themselves because we all use IT all day everyday, right?
So, next time you see me on a TV show or in a film, please feel free to point at the screen and exclaim: "Why doesn't he/she just pullout the plug just like anyone else in IT would do?" #tvTrope #tvTropes
